It’s good that Ryan Reynolds has become one of the most powerful men in Hollywood! It’s really good! I mean, he spent years making us laugh with romcoms and whatever Waiting is. Without him, there would be no fourth-wall-breaking silliness in the MCU. Can you imagine a world without Mint Mobile? Are you going to sit there and tell me you don’t exclusively drink Aviation Gin?! Surely, you wouldn’t imply that you didn’t get emotional watching Welcome To Wrexham?!?!
Good. That would be a silly thing to do. Ryan just wants what’s best for all of us. Yes, that’s it. It’s a good thing. It’s a really good thing. His star shines so brightly in Hollywood that he can push for a movie series to be revived while it is actively being rebooted (okay, maybe it’s not that active). Hell, he’s trying to revive ones that never even got off the ground. Then there’s whatever the hell is going on with It Ends With Us, which I will not touch, because it’s good that Ryan did or didn’t get involved!
Now, Reynolds is turning his sizeable Hollywood influence toward Stunt Performers. Stunt Performers are friggin’ awesome. They put their lives on the line to bring us magic. To say they deserve recognition would be an understatement. There’s an argument to be made that they should have their own award show. Still, a category devoted to them on one of Hollywood’s biggest nights would be really good.
The Two Guys, A Girl And A Pizza Place actor took to Twitter to plead a case for a stunt category at the Academy Awards. “Stunt work doesn’t have a category at The Oscars and I hope that’ll change someday,” Reynolds explained. “So many films have smashed it this year. Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd and Chaplin were stunt performers as well as filmmakers. Telling stories with their entire bodies. This D&W stunt team over-delivered. A lot of them are friends I’ve worked with for years and I’ll spend the rest of my days doodling their names in my Heidi Stationary, dotting all the ‘i’s’ with little hearts.”
He continued, noting “I’ve worked with Alex Kyshkovych since the very first [Deadpool]. He not only doubles me - he’s the Fight Coordinator. I’d take a sledgehammer to the face for Alex. Or rather, I’d ask Alex to take a sledgehammer to the face for Alex. Second Unit Director/Supervising Stunt Coordinator, George Cottle is a HUGE GET. You’ve seen his genius in Spider-Man NWH along with a ton of other gems. His skill is world class and he made the entire film better. I’d let Alex take a fork to the eye for George.”
You can read the whole statement below. He also shouts out how Hugh Jackman does a lot of his own stunts, but still has an awesome Stunt Performer in Daniel Stevens. The message is very sweet. It turns attention to people who often don’t get the attention they deserve, and that is very nice. See! I was serious, Ryan! It’s good that you have so much power and influence! It’s really good! (But seriously, this is very good.)
