Because we didn’t cover it yesterday, it is worth mentioning to those who haven’t seen it yet: The New York Times revealed that musician Ryan Adams has a history of heinous behavior toward women, using his power to manipulate women into sex and retaliating against them when they spurned him. Adams’ ex-wife Mandy Moore also participated in the story, which also reveals that Adams had a sexting relationship with an underage girl.

Adams says some allegations are exaggerated and some are false. Also, Ryan Adams can go screw. I saw Ryan Adams in concert once. Worst show I’ve ever seen. He turned his back to the audience the entire show — you never saw his face, just the back of his jacket. I’m not surprised that a guy who treats his audience that way would treat women the way he has over the years. Success and talent should not absolve someone from decency, no matter how great those Whiskeytown albums were. And putting out 17 albums and 11 EPs does not make up for all the great music from female musicians we missed out on because Ryan Adams is a disgusting creep. He preyed on a 13-year-old girl whose father had just died, for God’s sake.

“I never see pics of you anymore,” Adams wrote in November 2014, when he had just turned 40 and Ava was newly 16. “You were blowing my mind.” He had pet names for her body parts.

Days later, Adams expressed anxiety: “If people knew they would say I was like R Kelley lol,” he wrote.

Yet within 10 minutes, the conversation again turned explicit. “I just want you to touch your nipple,” he texted, before again asking about her age. “And tell me that your mom is not gonna kill me if she finds out we even text.”

In response to Adams’s repeated pleas that she tell him she was 18 — “You have to convince me,” he wrote — Ava at times said she was. Sometimes he asked to see identification — “in the hottest way that has ever been done Lol.” She never showed him any ID.

Adams has also been shit-talking ex-wife Mandy Moore in interviews for years — being a petty wanker — and of course that tracks with his past behavior. He told Mandy Moore that she wasn’t a musician because she didn’t play an instrument and basically lorded his accomplishments over her, which not only sounds like a guy abusing his power over his wife but an insecure guy, at that.
Moore says that Adams belittled her and basically ended her once successful musical career.

She released her sixth LP, completed before their marriage, shortly after they wed in 2009, and has released no albums since. “His controlling behavior essentially did block my ability to make new connections in the industry during a very pivotal and potentially lucrative time — my entire mid-to-late 20s,” she said. Their divorce was finalized in 2016.

Ryan Adams is a lie. His music is a lie. The image he has cultivated over the last 20 years is a lie. Ryan Adams is just another low-life creep who abuses his power and preys on women. He sold himself as the sensitive, tortured rocker, but really, he’s just another petty, abhorrent sex pest.

Easy heart, my ass.
