Another woman has come forward with accusations of rape against the director Roman Polanski. Valentine Monnier, a former actress and photographer, wrote an open letter to French newspaper Le Parisien that she experienced an ‘extremely violent’ assault and rape at Polanski’s chalet in 1975 when she was 18 years old.

Monnier said that Polanski tried to make her swallow a pill during this alleged attack, which she says took place in the Swiss ski resort in Gstaad. She wrote:

‘Rape is a time bomb. The memory does not fade. It becomes a ghost and it follows you, and it changes you insidiously […] I denounce this crime knowing that there can’t be any punishment, in an attempt to end exceptions, impunity. Public figures are being considered as models. By idolizing the guilty ones, we prevent people from realizing the serious consequences of their acts.’

Polanski is not facing any legal action in France over this allegation since the 20-year statute of limitation has passed, but Monnier said she felt obliged to speak out now following the award-winning success of Polanski’s latest movie, An Officer and a Spy, which took home the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Polanski could not attend the festival to claim the prize due to extradition laws relating to a charge of statutory rape in 1977, a charge he pleaded guilty to.

In a statement to the Associated Foreign Press, Polanski’s lawyer, Herve Temime, said that his client ‘disputes in the strongest terms this rape accusation’ and that ‘we are working on the legal action to bring against this publication.’

Still think ‘cancel culture’ is real, anyone?!
