Robert DeNiro is known for being something of a prickly guy. He’s often monosyllabic in interviews, and answers yes or no questions with only a yes or no, often leaving awkward silences between questions (see, e.g., this Letterman interview with DeNiro and Hoffman). The guy is 72 and he’s been in the business for decades, so he often just doesn’t have the patience for it.

To wit: The other day, he stormed out of an interview after accusing the reporter of asking questions with a “negative inference” (she asked him how he manages to avoid going into autopilot mode) and, according the reporter, referred to her as “darling” in a condescending manner.

That’s DeNiro for you.

During that same interview, Anne Hathaway actually teared up in talking about what an honor it was to work with DeNiro. DeNiro, according the reporter, looked “disgusted and appalled,” which is not exactly the face you want to be wearing when a co-star is praising you.

Then earlier this week, Anne Hathaway revealed in an interview with Refinery29 that DeNiro was a huge fan of The Bachelor, and even showed the reporter the email confirming it.

He emailed, “You bet your ass I’m a big Bachelor fan.”

Turns out, DeNiro was being sarcastic, which most people would probably know. Eternal optimists like Anne Hathaway might not.

“He was being sarcastic and I don’t understand sarcasm in email form and I told the world that he liked The Bachelor,” Hathaway said on Good Morning America. “That was such a bad thing to do.”

No, Anne Hathaway. It was not “such a bad thing” to do. You were being you in your interpretation, and DeNiro was being DeNiro in his composition. You are someone who really works to try and make people like you, and he doesn’t give a shit what people think about him.

For whatever reason, the world generally sides with the glum DeNiros.

But you know what, Hathaway? You just keep doing you. Let the rest of the world come around to it.
