Robert De Niro Has Reached Peak Crotchety Old Man

Robert De Niro is the perfect grumpy old man. I don’t know how vehemently I need to defend this point; I think it’s pretty self-evident. He was born to shake a cane at neighborhood kids. Just look at this face. This is quintessential Grumpy Old Man face:

It now makes me so happy that De Niro’s words are catching up to his face. Back in September, he stormed out of an interview with a condescending “I’m not doing this, darling,” and made headlines for looking “disgusted and appalled” at Anne Hathaway’s general enthusiasm. Now, the 72 year old De Niro may have reached Peak Curmudgeon by telling a roomful of computer geeks he doesn’t give a crap about them.

At the WSJ Innovator Awards this week, Stewart Butterfield, the creator of the app Slack, seemed to be a little starstruck in his acceptance speech. He talked about how attractive celebrities are and how much he liked Godfather II. We don’t have his full speech, so maybe he did say something off-putting, or maybe his tone was weird, or maybe Robert De Niro has just finally emerged from his chrysalis as the IRL manifestation of the old man from Up. Because when he took the stage, he let loose.

De Niro, up next, growled, “Whoever the last speaker was . . . I thought you were a bit condescending to us actors . . . celebrities. I’m gonna go on record with you just to say that. And I don’t give a f - - k who you are.”

Butterfield, for his part, knows that when D Niro yells at you in public, it only means you’ve really made it.
