Don't Compare Your Marriage To 'Rick And Morty,' Kanye

First, let me start off by saying that I am one of the multitudes of people who like the Adult Swim cartoon, Rick and Morty — and even that can be a problematic statement, given the fact that some of the show’s fans are overly entitled jerks that even the show’s co-creator, Dan Harmon, loathes. What fans who aren’t the sort to storm a McDonald’s for some Szechuan Sauce know, of course, is that while Rick and Morty may be entertaining and intelligent in the way it subverts pop culture tropes to reveal the darker psychological implications of them, it’s hardly admirable or aspirational in any real-life sense.

But, like, tell that to Kanye West.

Sure, on the surface this could just be a bit of fanciful fan art. It’s a spot on rendering, after all. That’s Kanye as Rick, leading his wife, Kim Kardashian West, out of a portal. Maybe he posted it because he just likes the show and it made him laugh! Maybe he’s never even SEEN Rick and Morty but he likes the picture! Maybe somewhere there’s a Council of Kanyes and one of them happens to be animated and this isn’t fan art — it’s photographic evidence of the existence of infinite Kanyes.

Who knows, really. But for the sake of argument, let’s assume he does watch the show. Does he genuinely think that someone envisioning him and his wife as Rick and Morty is a compliment? Or, worse — does he GENUINELY think that being in any way similar to Rick and Morty, or having your marriage mirror their partnership, is a good thing? Because, it’s not. It’s actually pretty F*CKED.

Rick Sanchez is a volatile genius with substance abuse issues, a God complex, and a deep nihilism that is likely rooted in some sort of depression and/or borderline personality disorder. He blithely causes harm to others without thinking, interested solely in pursuing his own aims, and has lost touch with the perspective or concerns of the normal people around him. He has respect for no one — though he does, in his own effed up way, show some concern for his immediate family. Even if that concern is unbalanced and does more harm than good.

Morty is Rick’s traumatized relative, who is paralyzed by a deep need for approval and a fear of rejection… and of Rick’s unpredictability. He finds himself dragged along headfirst into danger due to his supposed partner’s neglect and poor judgment, but has become adept at picking up the pieces after one of Rick’s escapades.

And look, I don’t wanna read too much into this. It’s just a tweet. But also, it’s not like Kanye tweeted out fan art of him and Kim as The Doctor and a Companion, or as Doc Brown and Marty McFly, or any number of other adventuring duos. He tweeted out an image of a textbook toxic relationship, with his marriage inserted into it.

Oops?
