Friends, are you ready for a shock? Dazed and Confused, the 1993 classic movie about stoners partying and basically doing nothing, did not win any Academy Awards. That did not stop its cast from winning Academy Awards, though. A lot of them.
Yup, by my count, the cast has 5 Oscars. Zellweger’s two (Best Actress, Judy and Best Supporting Actress, Cold Mountain), Matthew McConaughey’s one (Best Actor, Dallas Buyer’s Club) and Ben Affleck’s two (Best Picture, Argo, Best Original Screenplay, Good Will Hunting.) Yes, the fact of the matter is, the cast of Dazed and Confused has won more Oscars than the cast of, well, many “good” movies, including such festival darlings as [Redacted].
In fact, I have it on good authority that [Redacted] fell so deeply into his method acting for [Redacted] that he starved himself, went multiple nights without sleep, and generally denied himself all worldly pleasures in order to achieve the gaunt, sunken look he adopted for his role in [Redacted.] In contrast, according to IMDB, the beer that was drunk in Dazed and Confused was real beer, so everyone was probably in a constant state of a mild buzz while working on that movie and yet, Dazeds’ cast is more award-winning than, well, take your pick.
Additionally, the dialogue in [Redacted] was written by Pulitzer Prize winning author [Redacted] who has yet to win an Oscar. In contrast Dazed and Confused reportedly used the word “man” over 200 times—its writer has sadly only been nominated for an Academy Award 5 times.
I was also told that the director of [Redacted] storyboarded every frame of his film, only to be denied the gold statue last night. Richard Linklater, the director of Dazed and Confused, made each cast member a mixtape of the music that their character would listen to. I hope Foghat was on every single one. It should be noted that Richard Linklater, as I mentioned above, has been nominated 5 times for an Academy Award.
So what’s the point of this? Why are we here?
Isn’t it obvious?
So here’s to livin’, and the cast of Dazed and Confused, one of the most-award winningest out there.
