Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, Dies Aged 99

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II for 73 years, has died at the age of 99. Buckingham Palace made the announcement this morning saying, ‘It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.’ Philip had been hospitalized for a month earlier this year with an infection and later underwent heart surgery for a pre-existing condition.

An official notice of his death was posted on the railings of Buckingham Palace, as is tradition for major royal announcements, but was being removed shortly afterward to avoid crowds gathering amid COVID-19 restrictions. It is unknown at this point in time what the funeral proceedings will look like given lockdown procedures.
