Former 007 and the upcoming No Escape’s pretty man, Pierce Brosnan has worked in the business nearly 40 years now, so I guess he’s not worried about burning bridges? Or maybe he’s just fed up with Hollywood’s bullshit, and if so, that’s pretty damned cool. In a quickie interview with Details matter-of-factly outed longtime Bond producer, Barbara Broccoli as being homophobic — at least, that’s how his comment comes off. Asked if he could see a gay 007, Brosnan said he absolutely could, but he doesn’t think it will happen anytime soon:
“Sure. Why not? [Pauses thoughtfully] Actually, I don’t know how it would work. I don’t think Barbara [Broccoli, the James Bond producer] would allow a gay Bond to happen in her lifetime. But it would certainly make for interesting viewing.”
That’s some strong wording (allow), but is he saying Broccoli is homophobic, or perhaps that she’s already discussed the possibility of Bond being gay and felt it wouldn’t work for the character? Personally, I think it could absolutely work. While 007 likes to sleep around, and the Bond girl thing has been iconic, there’s no reason he couldn’t swap teams, or even swing both ways. Oh and lordy, think of the suggestions we could make!
But (as usual), I digress…
Brosnan didn’t linger on the negativity, suggesting the franchise should first move forward with the next logical Bond actor:
“Let’s start with a great black actor being James Bond. Idris Elba certainly has the physicality, the charisma, the presence. But I think Daniel [Craig] will be there for a while yet.”
Does he know something we don’t know about Craig’s commitment?
While you mull over the implications, join me in a fourth cuppa as we wait for the inevitable Broccoli fallout.
