I’m a die-hard Anne Rice fan. I’ve read all of the Vampire Chronicles and most of her other stuff, even the bananas ones (seriously, most of her work is extremely weird and she does not get the credit she deserves for it.) So, I’ve waited for a very long time for a new adaptation of Interview With the Vampire. My hopes were sky-high for AMC’s lavish new take on the material, and even when I tempered my expectations after a few TV flops hit me hard (hello, Cowboy Bebop), I was encouraging. Mercifully, the show is somehow even better than I had hoped for. It’s a gorgeous piece of work, a baroque and intensely emotional reimagining that is faithful to the heart of Rice’s work yet makes exciting changes that expand its themes. It’s riveting stuff and I can’t wait to see where they take it now that they’ve revealed some major deviations from the books (oh my god THAT SEASON FINALE?!)

One of the reasons the show works as well as it does is because of its cast, particularly its leads. Sam Reid is somehow the perfect Lestat in ways I couldn’t have foreseen. Yet, perhaps unexpectedly so given that he is the protagonist of the book, this is the Louis show. And our new Louis has it all. So, I humbly submit to you, loyal Pajiba readers, my FYC for the hottest vampire of the 2020s so far:

Jacob Anderson!

Best known as Grey Worm from Game of Thrones, Anderson has totally reinvented the character of Louis de Point du Lac in ways that have made him the undisputed star of the show in a world where Lestat exists. Seriously, this is a big deal. Don’t get me wrong, Louis is my guy. He’s my favorite agonizingly emotional vampire who turned self-hatred into an undead sport. But he has never been the priority in the Vampire Chronicles. That’s always been the Brat Prince himself, the charismatic trickster and lover who became a rockstar, hung out with the Devil, and took over as the king of all vampires. It’s not hard to see why he’s the best, even if that left Louis on this sidelines. But Anderson’s Louis? He is second to nobody. This is a Louis with swagger. He’s charming, ambitious, tortured, funny, and has a far lower bullsh*t tolerance than his literary counterpart. All that AND he has chemistry to kill for with Reid?

Anderson is giving one of the best performances on TV in 2022 (which is, of course, being ignored by most critics’ groups.) His Louis is nobody’s second best, even when Lestat is sucking the life out of everyone around him. I’m so excited by how Anderson has reimagined this character I’ve held so dear since my adolescence. There’s so much I can’t wait to see him do with Louis. Do we get to see more of him in Lestat’s rockstar years?! I won’t offer any more speculation lest I spoil the magic of that first season, but seriously, go watch it. Does my fangirling not convince you? How about all of this?

(It also goes without saying that you should consider Sam Reid as my other FYC but I mustn’t be too greedy.)

So, cast your ballots wisely, and consider everyone’s favorite bloodstained over-emotional queer New Orleans vampire. Do it for him.
