Of Course Michael Cera Has a Flip Phone

In the forthcoming PEOPLE magazine Barbie special, Simu Liu talked about Margot Robbie hosting sleepovers for the other actresses.

“The Kens were allowed to either visit briefly or to phone in and say hi,” he explained, referring to the other male actors on the cast. “So we made sure to show our support but not be overbearing with our presence. And all the Barbies and Kens got in a group chat.”

Everyone except Michael Cera, that is. Because he has a flip phone. But he said he was fine with not being included because he didn’t think his character in the film would have fit in either. He added that when he arrived on set, director Greta Gerwig presented him with a copy of NSYNC’S No Strings Attached, “which felt like somehow a real guiding light in the backstory of this character.”

Cera talked about his modern technology aversion with The Hollywood Reporter in February. He was asked if his absence on social media was a conscious decision.

“It doesn’t feel conscious. I guess it’s just something that I didn’t elect to do. Because everybody does it, it starts to feel like a big choice. But it’s just not interesting to me. But I also don’t have a smartphone. And that is a conscious choice because I feel a bit of fear about it honestly like I’d really lose control of my waking life.”

He went on to say, “For many years, people resented me for this lifestyle choice. But now people say that they envy it.”
