Now We Know Who To Blame For The End Of Jackman's Wolverine: Jerry F**king Seinfeld

For Variety’s upcoming season of Actors On Actors, Hugh Jackman sat down with Willem DaFoe to discuss…well, acting. Duh. That’s literally what the whole thing is about. But in this clip from their session, the pair specifically discuss what inspired Jackman to retire his long-running, fan-favorite performance as the X-Men’s Wolverine.

Turns out, we have Jerry Seinfeld to thank for that.

Apparently Jackman was out to dinner with his bud Jerry, and he decided to ask him about the decision to end Seinfeld when he did. As Jackman recalls:

“He [Seinfeld] said, ‘I’ve always believed, you should never spend everything creatively because it’s almost herculean to start up again. You should always have something in the tank. Leave the party before it gets too late, kind of theory.”

Jackman absorbed the wisdom, and announced to his wife during his cab ride home that his next Wolverine film would be his last. That movie, as you know, was Logan. And the decision to walk away from the role after 17 years may have given him the inspiration to explore Wolverine as a man, rather than a hero.

So, whatever, everything worked out for the best. It’s fine. I’m happy for Hugh Jackman. But Seinfeld… maybe keep your words of wisdom to yourself next time. Because right now, we can use all the heroes (fictional or otherwise) that we can get.
