Pro wrestling is staged. The outcomes are predetermined; sometimes before the match, sometimes during (thank the referee for those). There is a lot of improv to get the details, but the wrestlers aren’t (usually) surprised. The bumps, bruises, cuts, and injuries are real. Very real. Despite a monumental return to the squared circle this year, Dwayne The Rock Johnson had left those in-ring injuries behind … or so he thought.
Johnson parlayed his wrestling career into being one of the most successful actors on the planet. It’s not even that he’s the most successful wrestler-turned-actor. He’s had more success than many who did not go from spandex to … other kinds of spandex. Self-proclaimed as Franchise Viagra, The Rock is a Hollywood mainstay and is currently filming a movie with one of the Safdie brothers.
The movie, titled The Smashing Machine, is about UFC fighter Mark Kerr. Johnson looks to be doing something more “serious” than his usual films. He’s even sporting some prosthetics to change his face (or at least the middle third). Time will tell if it goes over well with critics and fans. We do know that filming is well underway, and Dwayne has sustained a nasty injury from it.
The Brahma Bull took to Instagram to show off a gnarly bump on his elbow. “Anytime your film is called The Smashing Machine, you’re going to get smashed up. Look at this sucker right there. It’s like a cantaloupe in the bottom of my elbow,” explained The Rock while showing off the softball-sized lump on his elbow. “I got banged up pretty good today in our scenes.”
“There might be some soft tissue damage in there. That’s a lot of fluid. I got to get it out of there first before I get any kind of MRI,” The Rock continued. He remains optimistic, though. “But all good, it is what it is ‘til it isn’t. My old man used to say a day without pain is like a day without sunshine.” The video is below if you’d like to see it. It isn’t exploding or dripping or even red, but it’s real, and it’s rough-looking.
