Look, I’ll come clean here: I most definitely watched Newlyweds, the awful reality show that followed Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson’s marriage before it imploded. While it’s most memorable for Jessica’s perceived cluelessness (remember when she asked if “Chicken of the Sea” brand tuna was tuna or chicken…) I personally will never forget the time Nick took down a beehive with a stick (in retrospect probably a hornet’s nest) and tried to eat the “honey” inside multiple times. So, let’s just say it wasn’t just her. Also, since we’re on the subject of Jessica Simpson in that era, I’m going to lose standing with a few of you for this, but that’s OK—her cover of “Take My Breath Away” isn’t bad. In fact, I like it.

If you’re wondering why I’ve brought up Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson like it’s 2003, no—you haven’t gone back in time via a hot tub time machine, that experience is rarer than you think, so stop asking me if you’ve gone back in time in a hot tub time machine. Like I’ve told you multiple times, when it happens, you’ll know.

No, we’re discussing these two today because Jessica Simpson has put out a book, and she’s talking about her exes. Unlike John Mayer, who come on—everyone knows is a jackass, Jessica has nice things to say about Nick. Per People.com:

“We were young and pioneering our way through reality television, always miced and always on,” says Simpson, now 39. “We worked and we were great at it but when it came time to being alone, we weren’t great at it anymore.”

“We really got crushed by the media and by ourselves,” admits Simpson, who asked for a divorce in 2005. “I couldn’t lie to our fans and I couldn’t give somebody hope that we were this perfect golden couple.”

Of all the things to say about your ex—that’s pretty kind and mild. Which is basically how to describe Nick’s comments on the matter, per ETOnline:

Lachey and his wife, Vanessa Minnillo, stopped by the Today show on Monday and reacted to Jessica Simpson’s upcoming memoir, Open Book. The 46-year-old singer and Simpson were married from 2002 to 2006.

“I’ll be honest, I obviously haven’t read the book, so I don’t know what she said or what she revealed there,” Lachey said. “But certainly happy for her in her life and I know she is happy for us. There is definitely a mutual respect there.”

“Obviously it was a long time ago and we’ve all moved on,” he added of his current wife and Simpson’s husband, Eric Johnson.

I mean, there you have it—Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey have nice things to say about each other. Is it news? I don’t know, you clicked on this article so you’ll probably have a stronger opinion on the matter than me.

Now excuse me while I go dance in my living room to this song, which is also a jam:
