If you run in certain gossip circles, you’ve likely seen your fill of Miley Cyrus stories since she and Liam Hemsworth announced that they were divorcing. Celebrity media has been obsessed with the couple throughout their on-again and off-again relationship dating back to 2009 when they were both essentially teenagers.

Earlier this month, after a decade, a break-up, a reconciliation, and a marriage, the couple announced that they were divorcing around the same time that photos surfaced of Cyrus kissing The Hills: New Beginnings star Kaitlynn Carter, who had also just announced her divorce from Brody Jenner — the speculation, however, is that Hemsworth and Cyrus had been separated for months.

A couple of days after the split was announced, Hemsworth spoke to the divorce on Instagram, saying that “Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward.
This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false.”

That was the final word on the matter from Hemsworth, although speculation and gossip continued to swirl around Cyrus — as it is wont to do on the Internet — and that speculation included accusations of cheating on Cyrus’ part. Today, she took to Twitter to refute those allegations. Here’s the text of those tweets:

“I can accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent with my fans who I love, and the public, 100% of the time. What I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed. I have nothing to hide.

It is no secret that I was into partying in my teens and early 20’s. I have not only smoked, but advocated for weed, I’ve experimented with drugs, my biggest song to date is about dancing on molly and snorting lines in the bathroom. I f*cked up and cheated in relationships when I was young. I lost a massive Walmart deal at 17 for ripping a bong. I got kicked off hotel Transylvania for buying Liam a penis cake for his birthday and licking it. I swung on a wrecking ball naked. There are probably more nudes of me on the internet than maybe any woman in history.

But the truth is, once Liam & I reconciled, I meant it, & I was committed. There are NO secrets to uncover here. I’ve learned from every experience in my life. I’m not perfect, I don’t want to be, it’s boring. I’ve grown up in front of you, but the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP. I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating. Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will.

BUT at this point I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time. You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking , foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar. I am proud to say, I am simply in a different place from where i was when I was a younger.”

Remember when the very private Kristen Stewart released a public apology acknowledging that she cheated on Robert Pattinson? This is basically the inverse of that and probably something that Cyrus felt she had to release because tabloid “sources” were depicting the divorce as nasty. As we often see in these situations, the women in the relationships take the brunt of it on social media, and this is just another version of a woman having to perform the experience of a relationship while a man gets to have the narrative filled in for him. Donald Trump, after all, didn’t go after Robert Pattinson; he went after Kristen Stewart. Unfortunately, in the world of the tabloids and celebrity gossip, the onus to explain oneself too often falls on to the female celebrity in a public break up.
