Today in Big Red Flags, we turn to Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams and her partner Chad Johnson. The pair have a reality show on OWN called Chad Loves Michelle, which is following them through to their nuptials. Williams has openly struggled with depression. As detailed in O Magazine, the wedding date was pushed back so that Williams could seek treatment in a mental health facility. Being in the public eye and dealing with depression is tough and I commend Michelle for doing so under difficult circumstances. So, you’d think that Chad here - and of course he’s called Chad - would be supportive of his beautiful, talented, hard-working fiance? Ha.
In a promotional clip for the second episode, the couple revealed they had an argument and race was brought up by Michelle, which Chad here didn’t like.
Michelle said, while talking to their couples’ therapist, ‘I said something to him on the lines of ‘Well, Chad, because you are not Black you would not understand why I communicate the way I do. Maybe because you didn’t grow up around a lot of Black people.’ So that was very, very offensive to Chad […] And this is not to justify it, but yesterday when we had the disagreement, he said ‘Did you take your meds today?’
What a charmer, eh? But it’s okay because he apologized but only after reminding Michelle that a black woman talking about race is just as offensive as ableism. Keep in mind that black women in America are among one of the most under-treated groups for depression. Even those women that do receive treatment are still likely to be given inadequate care.
Oh, did I mention that this dude is a pastor?
And yes, he does go for the full, ‘It doesn’t matter to me if you’re black, white, green, yellow…’ deflection. Someone let the Grinch know he’s safe with Chad!
Michelle, if you need me to go full Solange in an elevator with this dude, DM me. \
