Back in 2014-15, Michael C. Hall played the title character on Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch where he met Peter Yanowitz — the original drummer for Jakob Dylan’s band, The Wallflowers — who played drums for the show. Yanowitz, meanwhile, played with Matt Katz-Bohen on the touring production of Hedwig, and eventually, the three got together to make music, which led to their band Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum.

The band, for which Hall provides lead vocals, is exactly what that band name suggests: Avant-pop. It’s moody, there’s a lot of synthesizers, and it feels like that kind of music where you keep waiting for the big crescendo but it never comes because Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum refuses to abide by simple songwriting structures.

If you ever visited a used record store in the ’90s that smelled like incense and old vinyl, the music you probably heard sounded a bit like Princess Goes to the Butterfly, and the guy behind the register playing it had to be pulled out of that record store by his hands and feet in 2002 when the store went out of business. Upside: He’s living his best life since he started collecting enhanced unemployment benefits 14 months ago when the coffee shop you’re too intimated to walk into furloughed him, and now he’s super into Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum and reads Pajiba ironically.

Check out the video for Ketamine.

I’ve watched a few of their videos now, and this is definitely my favorite, if only because it changes speeds.

Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum are on Spotify, and they were playing shows before the pandemic shut them down. Michael C. Hall, meanwhile, is shooting the revival of Dexter, which is expected to come out later this year. And yes, we all hated seasons five through eight (including Michael C. Hall). And yes, we’re all still gonna watch the sh*t out of the ninth season.
