Mark Duplass' High School Paper Review of 'Before Sunrise' Is a Snarky Teen Dream

Mark Duplass has made a career of playing characters that have a pretty equal balance of charming crush and self-satisfied smarm. And if that isn’t the perfect description of every guy you knew in high school, I don’t know what is; so it’s no great stretch to gather the image of a mid-90s high school version of Duplass, clad in his Green Day t-shirt (shut your mouth, these were the Dookie days, and they were totally edgy), pushing his glasses up his nose while fervently hand-writing snarky yet heartfelt film reviews of movie no high schooler was interested in, right?

Someone unearthed this high school newspaper review that Duplass wrote of Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise back in 1995, and I just want to make sure you have the full teenage Duplass image in your head before you read it.

If you have trouble reading it, know that Teen Duplass pans Linklater’s early films (well, he seemed to find Dazed and Confused amusing), but he considers this “nothing short of innovative and intellectual perfection… the first truly intelligent romance.” And, like a true teenage poet, chalks the story up to “one of those rare connections that occur between people.” Be still my teenage heart. My kingdom for a time machine.
