Marilyn Manson Denies Involvement in Eli Roth/Lana Del Rey Rape Video

Earlier today, Marilyn Manson released a statement about disturbing footage of Eli Roth raping Lana Del Rey (the video opens with Manson sitting at a table and the singer appears intermittently). Here’s the statement:

“Manson did not direct this, shoot it, nor was it for a Marilyn Manson video or outtake footage made by him or to be used by him with his music. It must be a fan video splicing up old Manson video footage with someone else’s Lana Del Rey footage.”

Thing is, in an interview about a year ago, Roth claimed he “…shot a video with Manson and Lana Del Rey…the footage is so sick it’s been locked in a vault for over a year.”

Whether this was that shoot, or something spliced together with existing video, seems up for debate, but the bottom line is, WTF are these people thinking? Roth seems pretty proud of himself in that interview, so it’s clear he thinks the footage is good for something.

On the same day that I read this Rolling Stone piece (H/T MBB) about rape on the University of Virginia campus — a piece that everyone on this planet needs to read — it’s nothing short of soul-crushing to see music artists participating in a video like this. So I’m going to use this opportunity to share that article and ask that you all read it. We’ve got such a shitstorm going on at colleges in this country right now, that passing around stories like these is a necessity. I don’t know about you, but I have two daughters that will be going to college someday, and I’m already terrified for them. I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure all my kids are aware and smart and self-defensive. I’m going to pass this story to everyone I know so people don’t keep sticking their heads in the sand, or let schools get away with it when they cover this shit up — let’s get out the word because as in the words of UVA Dean Nicole Eramo, “Nobody wants to send their daughter to the rape school.” Okay lady, if you won’t fix that problem, the rest of us will; now your school will be known as just that.

I’m not certain what the right thing to do here is — but you’re all grown-ups so here is the video in question. My suggestion is that you don’t bother watching it, spend your time reading the RS piece, and pass it on. Reading it is less pleasant, I can tell you that, but it’s also something we all need to face and figure out how to change. This video — it’s already done.

*Update: Following the Rolling Stone article and associated publicity, UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan announced the voluntary suspension of all fraternity parties. Though it is reprehensible it took the university this long to take appropriate action, at least they’re finally doing something.
