*deep breath*

I’m going to do my best not to be judgmental with this news, because I’ve never been in a physically abusive relationship with someone I loved; I can’t claim to know the dichotomy one must feel in such a situation. That said, it’s difficult not to be disappointed by the news that Madonna has inserted herself into the very public dispute between her ex-husband, Sean Penn, and Lee Daniels. You may remember that a few months back Penn filed a defamation suit against Daniels for a statement the director made to The Hollywood Reporter:

“That poor boy… [Terrence] ain’t done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn, and all of a sudden he’s some f—in’ demon. That’s a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America.” (Daniels)

In a rather lengthy diatribe that included references to himself as an acting icon, Penn’s ten million dollar lawsuit claims that Daniels’ “egregious” comments falsely equated him with another alleged abuser, Terrence Howard, and Penn claimed Madonna would attest that Penn had never been arrested or convicted for domestic violence. And so she has:

In her affidavit, Madonna states that none of those horrific stories of Penn’s abuse are true.

None of us were there of course, but certainly there have to be some police records if those reported incidents happened; I’m no expert, but even if Madonna withdrew her complaint, the original files would remain. And if those records do exist, and Madonna is covering for Penn, there’s no one she’s hurting more than herself.
