A little less than a month since filmmaker Lilly Wachowski came out a trans woman, she’s made her first public appearance at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday, where her and sister Lana’s Netflix show Sense8 won best drama series.

In her acceptance speech, Lilly jokes about the tabloid rag that blackmailed her into going public. She ponders the cosmic confluence that has led to this moment at the GLAAD Media Awards, and thrills over how the Wachowski Sisters’ films (The Matrix, Cloud Atlas, Jupiter Ascending) can now be considered “through the lens of our trans-ness.”

“This is a cool thing, because it’s an excellent reminder that art is never static,” Lilly said with her sister/co-director and parents in the audience, “While the ideas of identity and transformation are critical components in our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love. Love is a crucial thing for transgender people, it’s a tether.”

Sadly, the full speech isn’t available in this clip, but THR reports Lilly also said, “There is a political aspect to coming out, particularly for someone in my position, and I was acutely aware of that. In some ways, it’s a burden, but I know that I would have to come out at some point and I wanted to do it in such a way that I could help as many people as I could.”

She also declared, “When faced with a rather simple proposition of whether you’re unlovable, our imagination falters. Too many of us end up on the wrong side of the existential question of love or oblivion. And so we ring that bell. Not just for everyone else’s sake but our own…Now get out there and go love with all your fucking might!”
