Let's All Skeptically Assess Guy Pearce's New Career

Guy Pearce, best known for his roles in Iron Man 3, The Hurt Locker, L.A. Confidential, Memento and one-third of all independent films produced since Memento, will release an album in November. Its title is Broken Bones, and the first single is Storm. You can listen to it here.

My first impression is that it sounds like a bit like Alice in Chains on lithium, which is to say: It’s not great, but it’s not embarrassing, either, and by the end of the song, it had grown on me.

Apparently, Pearce has always wanted to become a musician, but feared doing so, dating back to his days on the Australian soap, Neighbors.

He admitted the stigma of cast mates Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Craig McLachlan being savaged for going from Ramsay Street to the charts haunted him for decades, forcing him to keep his music to himself.

“Every time I did an interview in the late `80s and early `90s and mentioned I made music the journalist would roll their eyes and go ‘Not another f@#!ing actor who’s going to release a single’,” Pearce said.

“I would extremely apologetically say ‘No, of course not! I’d never inflict that on the world’. I allowed that narrow minded belief to drive everything for years. Although maybe people were just sick of actors making music …

Well, finally, the Golden Globe nominee can break free from the mockery, and I will actually give him a fair shot because the album was recording in Neil Finn’s studio and former Split Enz member Eddie Raynor plays on the album, and that that is a selling point probably makes me as woefully out of touch as it does Guy Pearce.

Here’s Guy Pearce sounding like a poor man’s Peter Gabriel in a movie.
