Letitia Wright Did Not Want Daily Wire Involved With Her New Movie

Despite Letitia Wright being ensconced in controversy after sharing an anti-vax and transphobic video during the COVID pandemic, Marvel still soldiered on pushing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever into theaters and giving Wright the mantle of the titular character following the death of Chadwick Boseman. Wright has recently expressed heavy interest in continuing that story, so the last thing she needs is more headlines where she’s connected to fringe weirdos.

Unfortunately, the studio behind Wright’s new film, Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot, allegedly made a decision behind her back to partner with The Daily Wire. Despite being an executive producer, Wright fired off a statement on Instagram denouncing the partnership and emphasized that she had no idea it was happening. She’s also understandably pissed that her film is now another political football after she got dragged for being associated with the right-wing rag.

This story isn’t about politics, it’s about children. It’s about sacrificial love for children who have experienced unthinkable horrors and how communities at a grassroots level - like the community of Possum Trot - can help provide the safe, loving homes they so desperately need. Any conversation that detracts from that is unnecessary and harmful. The potential for this film to positively change lives is far too important.

To be clear, after we completed the production of this film, Angel Studios were brought on board to handle its distribution and they later partnered with The Daily Wire. That was not my decision, and I was not given an update or made aware of this decision. I am in no way aligned or affiliated with the The Daily Wire. I am thankful for all who want to positively champion this film and campaign to serve children. However, I do not condone using this beautiful film for divisive political purposes. That is not why I joined the project.

In Wright’s defense, the movie does seem pretty innocuous. Granted, it is absolutely a faith-based film, and from Angel Studios, the outfit behind Sound of Freedom. But according to Variety, it’s mostly a feel-good story about a Texas town adopting 77 kids who were stuck in the foster system. I’m sure there’s a lot of glossing over of actual facts while pouring on the religious hokum, but it’s not spamming any of the hot-button culture issues. I’m not trying to cape for the movie or anything, but I can see Wright getting involved and thinking, “Yeah, OK, this seems harmless.”

Naturally, The Daily Wire is already making hay of Wright denouncing its involvement and calling her part of the modern Left, which is hilarious given Wright’s well-noted evangelical beliefs and, uh, all the vaccine stuff.

“Such is the intolerance of the modern left that instead of celebrating this accomplishment and all it might mean, one of the film’s producers, Letitia Wright of ‘Black Panther’ fame, used the occasion to condemn The Daily Wire’s involvement in sharing this message across the country,” CEO Jeremy Boreing told Variety in a statement. “Letitia and I probably don’t share the same politics, but I believe we share a Christian faith and, more importantly, the same goal of shining a light on something we can all agree on — a community banding together to help kids in need. We hope people don’t allow this distraction to steal from the message from the film and the impact it can have.”

What’s the lesson here? Don’t make faith-based films or you will get tainted by the worst people imaginable. Sure, Reacher came out unscathed, but that could’ve very easily gone south. What were you doing, big guy?
