Back in 1968, Leonard Nimoy received a letter from a young biracial girl who was being ostracized by her schoolmates. Rather than ignore the letter or send back an autographed headshot, Nimoy wrote back a lengthy, detailed, and incredibly heartfelt response, using the story of Spock’s otherness to help guide this girl towards some sort of self-appreciation. And on top of that, he also allowed the teen magazine Fave to publish his letter, as a way of hopefully reaching out to all young people struggling to find their identity.
The world lost a great man today. Not just a man who played a character we love, but who appreciated our love and admiration and worked hard to make sure he deserved it. He really did make this world a better place. Thanks to Buzzfeed for unearthing this letter, and warning: there be tears ahead.
