So, Kylie Jenner got a haircut.

Short hair is in right now, but that didn’t stop the masses from attributing the sudden chop to what some call “The Boyfriend Effect,” and what I call “Twin[ning] Flames,” or sometimes “Relation Contagion” (okay, I haven’t landed on it yet but we’re getting close). The point is, fans think she looks like her boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet.

Jenner’s look has been changing from the high glam aesthetic of her youth to something a little more casual ever since she started dating Chalamet. She’s wearing less makeup and, in general, looks more natural, which is only noticeable because we originally came to know her as the lip filler girl.

She seems to be veering away from the heavily contoured, artificial aesthetic of her family and toward the fashion of the Hollywood scene she’s found herself in.

You might laugh and mutter “Ah, youth,” remembering the time you bleached your hair and got a tongue piercing to impress the guy you had a crush on in college who was the lead singer of a punk band. We’ve all been there. But celebrity Relation Contagion is a different thing entirely; not as much a rite of passage as a tradition held sacred for its prophesying potential. When celebrity couples start looking alike, it’s either the canary in the coal mine of their love or the foundation of a relationship built to last.

Take for example: Brad Pitt, who morphs his appearance to better fit the women he’s with, like a seasonal accessory.

The other side of the coin is the Beckhams, who for as long as we’ve known them have fielded negative headlines with matching outfits, and they’re still going strong.

Psychologists say the phenomenon of celebrity couples dressing alike signals that their relationship is “aspirational” because it makes them “appear more connected emotionally” by “expressing solidarity and togetherness.” It often occurs “in the early stages of relationships, the honeymoon period” or “when things are not so good, and they might be trying to show a united front.”

It’s too early to say which one Kylie and Timmy are, but let them live in the meantime, okay?
