Kevin Spacey made a surprise appearance in a court in Massachusetts today to submit his plea of not guilty to a charge of indecent assault and battery. This was unusual given that he was not required to attend proceedings and has largely avoid public appearances since accusations of sexual harassment and assault against him made headlines in late 2017. According to The Associated Press, Spacey wore a gray suit and glasses and did not comment to the press as he entered the courthouse with his lawyers (the above picture is from an earlier appearance). He has been accused of groping a young man at a Nantucket bar in 2016.

Spacey accused the young man, who said he groped him for three minutes and plied him with alcoholic drinks while he was underage, of extortion and wishing to make money in a civil case against him. Spacey’s lawyers claim that the accuser’s cellphone history reveals evidence of his lies and urged the court to order prosecutors to hand over a ‘complete and unaltered’ forensic copy of it. They are also seeking any communications about the case made by one of the prosecutors of the Cape and Islands DA office as they are allegedly vague friends with the accuser’s mother. The court has already ordered that the Nantucket restaurant the incident allegedly took place in must turn over all surveillance footage from the night in question.

This is the only criminal case that has been brought against Spacey but it is not the first or last allegation that has been made about his predatory behaviour. Indeed, stories of Spacey’s history were as whispered about in entertainment circles as stories about Harvey Weinstein or Bryan Singer. He remains, dishearteningly, one of the few major figures of the post-Weinstein era to actually be put on trial. You may recall the last time Spacey, who chose to come out as gay as a handy-but-failed shield against the accusations made by Anthony Rapp, showed his face in public. Remember that YouTube video where he played Frank Underwood in a Christmas apron and said he would be back? He infamously said, ‘So we’re not done, no matter what anyone says. And besides, I know what you want. You want me back.’

Yeah, no, we’re good.
