Where were you when you first heard Ke$ha’s debut single, “TiK ToK”? I was in my last year of college, and my girlfriends had dragged me out to this horrid club, Stages, on a cold winter night. I hate clubs and I really hated Stages. My only option was to get wrecked on vodka crans and Jägerbombs.
I have a vivid memory of trying to fix the gold belt I’d fastened over my fuschia peplum top (ft. a turquoise statement necklace [yes, there are pictures]) while the DJ blasted the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling”. Then, he transitioned into “TiK ToK”, and the club was flooded with these now-iconic lyrics: “Wake up in the mornin’ feelin’ like P. Diddy!” The crowd. Went. Wild. “TiK ToK” became the best-selling song of 2010 and Kesha was a STAR.
A helluva lot has changed since 2009 (the math tells us it was 15 years ago, but I’m skeptical). Kesha dropped the dollar sign from her name, shifted away from “party rap”, and was locked in a years-long legal battle with her ex-producer, Dr. Luke. They finally settled in June 2023.
Then there’s P. Diddy. In 2024, nobody would write a song saying that they “feel” like Diddy unless they were also an (alleged) sexual abuser/rapist/trafficker under investigation by the feds. Especially not Kesha, who accused Dr. Luke of drugging and sexually assaulting her.
So, it’s no surprise that Kesha updated the “TiK ToK” lyrics during her surprise appearance at Renée Rapp’s Coachella set this weekend. Renée introduced Kesha with, “This, I think, is the hottest person on the Earth. Everybody put your f*cking hands together for KESHA!” When Kesha walked out, she immediately broke into, “Wake up in the morning like F*CK P. DIDDY!” Renée joined Kesha on the “F*ck P. Diddy” part, and both singers raised their middle fingers in defiance.
Kesha uploaded video of the performance (and multiple pics of her ‘I AM MOTHER’ tank) to Instagram:
