Remember Kim Kardashian West’s Met Gala look this year? I really loved it. Okay, it didn’t meet the dress code of camp, but come on, look at this design. Mugler came out of retirement to make this and it’s honestly such a stunning and complete aesthetic. The sheer detail of it still gets me and Kim looked great. If you saw the video she made for Vogue on the prep required for such an outfit and THAT corset, you’ll know that fashion is pain and she really suffered for it. Seriously, THAT WAIST.
Guess who didn’t like the dress: Kanye West. Ah yes, the man of endlessly good ideas. It’s always sound to take fashion tips from the man who turned up at the Met Gala dressed like the security guard who slept in. Bang-up job, West.
‘I went through this transition where being a rapper, looking at all these girls and looking at my wife, like, ‘Oh my girl needs to be just like the other girls showing their body off.’ I didn’t realize that that was affecting my soul and my spirit as someone who is married and the father of now… about to be four kids. A corset is a form of underwear, it’s hot, for who though?’
Urgh. So much slut-shaming going on here.
Kim was having none of it and noted how his criticisms were giving her bad anxiety. Apparently, Kanye is affected ‘when pictures are too sexy’, to which Kim said, ‘You built me up to be this sexy person and confidence and all this, and just because you’re on a journey and transformation doesn’t mean I’m in the same spot with you.’
This isn’t the first or last time Kanye West has wielded an unnerving level of control over his wife’s image. Indeed, you could make the case that her transformation over the past decade or so since entering a relationship with him as been much more in his camp than her own. Think of their extremely austere home and how Kim admitted it was all Kanye’s idea or the now-infamous moment from an early episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians where, when they were still dating, he brought along his own stylist to clear out Kim’s closet of all the clothes he didn’t approve of. Kim even confessed that this incident made her cry.
Stylistically speaking, Kim Kardashian is now far more popular and more widely accepted by the general high-fashion community than she was before meeting Kanye, so maybe this is all worth it for her. Still, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who sees stuff like this and gets a sinking feeling in their gut.
