For those of you not in the know, The Last Leg is a British comedy and and late night chat show. It airs on Channel 4 and is hosted by Australian comedian Adam Hills and co-hosted by British comedians Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker. It follows a fairly standard ‘ironically detached white dudes comment archly on the news’ kinda format. Host Adam Hills has had a few impassioned, smirky rants go viral or mini-viral in the past, and the show has shown itself to be shockingly ignorant when it comes to British politics once or twice, but by and large The Last Leg doesn’t really register much in the manically crowded media landscape (I initially made a typo there—‘ladscape’—that I might as well have left as it actually describes our blokey bloke banter bonanza media quite aptly).
That is until last night, when Secret Best Chris, Chris O’Dowd, appeared on the show, trying to tell a slightly rambling story about his dog and Banksy, in the process providing the best moment (to my knowledge) in the show’s history:
Now, I have no idea whether O’Dowd is actually pissed there. All I will say is that I hope he is, and that all chat shows should henceforth follow this format. Graham Norton already plies his guests with wine to often hilarious results. That should be extended to all other shows in which celebrities talk. Or host parallel shows: The sober celebrity chat show, and the sloshed celebrity chat show, and let the almighty market decide which is worthy. (While you’re at it extend that to sports. I for one can’t wait to see the juiced Olympics. Let’s have some fun in these twilight years while we can before the planet finally says enough and wipes us out with the typhoons and hurricanes that we’ve made her make.)
