Jon Hamm Is Doing Well

It’s been a chaotic year for Jon Hamm. He entered rehab, he and his long-time girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt broke up, and his steady gig, Mad Men ended its run after being on the air for eight years (but not before Hamm finally won an Emmy award for his portrayal of Don Draper).

I was concerned that Hamm’s job prospect might run dry after Mad Men, forever associated with that iconic character. I still have that concern for Vincent Kartheiser, but it looks like Hamm — who has been displaying his comedic talents for years on SNL, 30 Rock, Bridesmaids, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt — is going to be just fine. In fact, he has four films lined up and he doesn’t have to play a hard-drinking ad man or a superhero in any one of them.

Here’s what’s on tap for Jon Hamm:

Baby Driver — Hamm has just signed on to Edgar Wright’s next film, about a a young getaway driver (Ansel Elgort), who finds himself taking part in a doomed heist after being coerced into it by a crime boss. Hamm will play the crime boss.

Marjorie Prime — Hamm will star in a film adaptation of the play by Jordan Harrison (a Pulitzer Prize finalist). It’s about Marjorie (Lois Smith), an elderly former violinist with arthritis who seeks out a service that provides holographic renderings of deceased loved ones as her memories begin to slip. Hamm will play the young version of Marjorie’s husband, in holographic form. Geena Davis and Tim Robbins have also signed on.

Keeping Up with the Joneses — Hamm is currently filming the next Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) film, which is about a suburban couple who becomes embroiled in an international espionage plot when they discover that their seemingly perfect new neighbors are government spies. Hamm stars alongside Gal Gadot, Isla Fisher, and Zach Galifianakis.

High Wire Act — Hamm is also tapped to star in director Brad Anderson’s (The Machinist) next film, which is about a former U.S. diplomat returns to service in order to save a former colleague in Beirut. Written by Tony Gilroy (the Bourne films), Hamm’s co-star is Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl).
