As we all know, the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released a few days ago. Lucky for me, I’ve managed to cultivate my online spaces well enough that the most controversy I’ve seen about the trailer has centered around that broadsword style lightsaber and who’s holding it. (I’m going against the grain and saying Gwendoline Christie just for funsies.)
However, some people have apparently taken issue with the fact that in a fantasy universe with intergalactic travel, sentient droids, all manner of aliens species, and a long list of other otherworldly developments, there is somehow a black man in a Stromtrooper outfit. Luckily, the incredibly talented and magnetic John Boyega (this is where I tell you to see Attack the Block if you haven’t already) has made it clear that he’s not going anywhere.
I’m as skeptical of Abrams taking over another high profile sci-fi series as anyone else, but I’ve been behind Boyega from day one. Here’s hoping all the other fans get on board soon.
