John Boyega is a tremendous actor with an undeniable screen presence. He has rightfully called out Disney and LucasFilm over how the sequel Star Wars trilogy failed its non-white actors and sidelined his story along with Oscar Isaac and Kelly Marie Tran in favor of Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver. I can’t wait to see where his career takes him as his charisma continues to grow throughout his performances. Still, there’s no defending his recent statement where he shares his opinion that Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is the worst of the sequel trilogy.
In a pre-taped interview with First We Feast’s Truth Or Dab: Rapid Fire, to promote his upcoming Netflix film They Cloned Tyrone, Boyega ranked the films. He put The Force Awakens at number one, followed by The Rise of Skywalker, then, finally, The Last Jedi.
Absolutely not.
Not only is The Rise of Skywalker the true loser of the trilogy, but The Last Jedi isn’t just the best of three but one of the best of the entire series, right up there next to The Empire Strikes Back. Johnson dares to make his heroes deeply flawed, from Poe to Luke, while also further enriching the world through gorgeous visuals and a narrative that suggests that anyone in this universe, no matter how small, could be a hero. In a saga so entrenched in one family’s lineage, it makes for a striking pivot and one that, clearly, plenty didn’t agree with. Where the very fun The Force Awakens played on nostalgia and scene recreations and callbacks to stir up the excitement of longtime fans, The Last Jedi instead made the radical decision (for this series at least) to change the pace and scope. It, along with Andor, are the best products of the saga in the last decade.
Despite personal differences regarding Boyega’s choices, he, as always, makes for a charming interview.
They Cloned Tyrone looks like a lot of fun and poor ranking aside, will be worth checking out when it hits Netflix on July 21.
