And I Wonder When We Are Ever Gonna Change It: Jessica Chastain Wants to Lead a Superhero Film

Hey Marvel/DC, in case you haven’t heard, we want a female superhero film, and we want it yesterday. And if you think people are going to stop pounding on your doors, you’re wrong. Case in point, Jessica Chastain, who’s pushing hard not only for Scarlett Johansson to finally get a Black Widow standalone film, but a scarred-up, ass-kicking role for herself. Though she doesn’t seem to have a particular character in mind, the actress clearly (rightly) won’t settle for anything less than a lead superheroine role. Speaking to The Guardian, Chastain laid out her requirements:

“I would love to do a superhero movie! I would have loved to have played Black Widow. A couple of times I’ve gotten really close. The problem is, if I do a superhero movie, I don’t want to be the girlfriend. I don’t want to be the daughter. I want to wear a fucking cool costume with a scar on my face, with fight scenes. That’s what I’d love.”

It irks me to have to say this, but yeah — “The problem is…” The subtext there is she’s been offered plenty of roles in superhero films (including Iron Man 3), but not the leads. You’d think Scarlett Johansson’s ass-kicking performances would be enough — RDJ does — but up against the male-dominated industry and seemingly chicken-shit leaders, that’s just not enough. So maybe what we need are a forward-thinking female writer, an inspiring director who wants to feature superheroines and an A-list star who’s not afraid to go after exactly what she wants. if what it takes is someone with Jessica Chastain’s Hollywood power (with a plethora of awards and a full dance card, she’s clearly in high demand) to kick off a new comic film era, so be it. Let’s kick this campaign into high gear. Kate Kane? Jessica Jones? Harley Quinn? Sorry, she can’t be Carol Danvers; I’ve already got that role filled.
