The new barometer for how much we respect/relate to/relentlessly mock a celebrity is the feminism question. Pretty much every interview now requires actresses (and occasionally actors too) to reveal their stance on their own equality. What this exposes more often than not is a fundamental misunderstanding of what the word “feminism” means. Over the decades it’s been distorted to mean everything everything from penis envy to a desire to stab every man on the planet through the heart with the heel of our lesbian stilettos. So it’s refreshing to see a woman in the public eye who may not know what the word means, but is open to learning new things.
Gina Rodriguez, who plays one of the coolest, kindest characters on television, was asked a simple question by a fan.
@HereIsGina would you call yourself a feminist? ily

And she gave a simple, if misguided answer.
“@djdodrugs: @HereIsGina would you call yourself a feminist? ily” I'm definitely a strong women. But full feminist, probably not.

Oops. But when she was called out for her misinformed response—
@HereIsGina …u do realize a feminist is someone who wants equal rights between men and women, right?

She actually seemed to appreciate the new information.
“@rachlegreen: @HereIsGina …u do realize a feminist is someone who wants equal rights between men and women, right?”clearly not. Then I am
