Some musicians have a style that is instantly recognizable. There are plenty who travel through the radio waves and leave no mark. However, there are a special few who ring into your ears in a way like no others. A guitar riff by Carlos Santana is going to hit differently. There will be no doubt when you hear a song by Lady Gaga. Prince made music like no one else (though several people tried to make music like Prince). Jack White is one such musician as well.

White is Co-founder and lead singer of the band The White Stripes. He also played with The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, with an equally impressive solo career. The man is a rock star, able to adapt to various styles while also having his own odd rock rhythm. He has had numerous hit records. One of the White Stripes’s songs, We’re Going To Be Friends, is the theme for Conan O’Brien’s podcast (that may be more important to me than it is to him). White and O’Brien are friends, and Conan has seen how much of an impact White’s sound has had.

O’Brien once told a story about going to a baseball game with White. They were sitting in their seats when the entire stadium began singing Seven Nation Army, a White Stripes song from the 2003 album Elephant. Conan listened as the crowd sang Jack’s song, in unison and then looked to his friend. Jack White was unfazed. He’s a cool rockstar, man. That’s the life. He won’t let it get to him. But not if Donald Trump wants to use the same song. That guy can get f***ed.

That is essentially what White said on Instagram. He learned that Trump’s Director of Communications, Margo Martin (a dale short of being exciting), released a video of Trump struggling to get up the stairs and looking like he’s getting kicked out of a casino. Seven Nation Army is playing over the sad video, presumably in an attempt to make it seem lively. Jack White was not a fan.

“Oh….Don’t even think about using my music you fascists,” Jack wrote on Instagram, sharing the pathetic video as well. “Lawsuit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others.) Have a great day at work today Margo Martin.” It’s one thing to threaten to sue someone, it’s a whole other smackdown to reference their numerous other lawsuits. But Jack was not done.

Before ending his statement, White took a shot at Trump’s recent shameless behavior at Arlington Cemetery. “And as long as I’m here, a double f*** you DonOLD for insulting our nation’s veterans at Arlington you scum. You should lose every military family’s vote immediately from that if ANYTHING makes sense anymore,” the musician said. Getting in a shot at Trump’s age with his name feels out of the Trump playbook but in a mocking way. I approve.

Trump’s political style has mostly been “do what you want and don’t apologize,” so I can’t imagine Martin or his team thought this would go unnoticed. She deleted the video, so she takes White seriously (as we all should). But this was never going to go over well, and now it’s just embarrassing.
