It's That Time of Year Again: When Celebrities Apologize For Their Halloween Costumes

As far as I’ve seen, there haven’t been a lot of horribly misguided celebrity Halloween costumes this year. Usually in the first few days of November, we get a LOT of outrage over famous people wearing blackface or dressing like “terrorists” or appropriating other cultures’ religious figures for funsies. Sure, we’ve gotten one Cecil the Lion apology and one— well, it was Halloween behavior and not a costume, and actually Nicki Minaj very aggressively did NOT apologize for a video she posted of herself (dressed like a fairy godmothery sort of something) commanding a person in a wheelchair to “WALK!” But she did take the video down.

…Sure. Moving on, the big apology of the day came in regard to Logan Echolls’ parents, Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rina. The two dressed up as Sid and Nancy, a badass couples costume if ever there was one. However, in choosing verisimilitude over, well, anything else, this is what Hamlin ended up wearing.

Because sure, Sid Vicious wore a t-shirt with a swastika on it. But you know what else he wore all the time? LOTS OF OTHER THINGS BESIDES THAT T-SHIRT. Also, sometimes no t-shirt. So many options! Rinna took to Instagram to apologize for Hamlin’s choice.

If I hurt you ❤️ we were being authentic to the characters of Sid and Nancy for our Halloween costumes. It hurt and angered many of you and we are deeply sorry for that. That was never our intention. We did not mean to offend. With love, Lisa and Harry.

And Hamlin wore a super subtle sort of apology, “Definitely not a Nazi” declaration on Sunday.

I know most of us are beyond tired of what we see as the pointless outrage/celebrity apology machine, but if we could separate people who wear blackface and swastika shirts, even just for a costume, from, say, every joke Emily Blunt makes, there would be a lot fewer apologies we’d have to sit through.
