I’m Not Ready to Face a Luke Perry-less '90210' Reboot

I cried when Luke Perry died. You can never predict the celebrity deaths that will hit you, but Perry’s hit me hard. Maybe it was Pike. Maybe it was Dylan McKay. Maybe it was just mourning for the loss of a childhood crush, but I’m still sad over his sudden passing in March.

Time, however, marches on and the 90210 limited-run reboot that was announced shortly before Perry’s death is going full-steam ahead, although not without sadness at the Dylan-shaped hole the show will have.

Brian Austin Green, who let’s be honest, we all know as David Silver and must never forget the multiple times 90210 forced his rapping onto an unsuspecting public, like here:

Anyway, Green recently spoke to People.com about the impact Perry’s passing had on the new series and the loss the cast feels:

“It’s a hard situation,” Green, 45, tells PEOPLE. “I knew that going into it that Luke couldn’t do the reboot because he was shooting Riverdale. But my honest hope was he would make time to come do at least three episodes. He was awesome.”

[…]

“We talked to him on the phone because we still wanted his input,” he says. “He was just that kind of guy. Knowing that that’s not a possibility is really hard.”

I think the room just got a bit dusty, here.

I’m excited to spend time with the Walsh twins, Donna Martin (who graduated!), Kelly Taylor and the rest of the West Beverly gang, again, but knowing that Dylan won’t be there will be bittersweet. I grew up with 90210. I love 90210. I just don’t know what 90210 will be like without Dylan. I’ll tune in to find out, but it just won’t be the same. (Yes, obviously I know he occasionally left the show for seasons at a time, like when his father-in-law accidentally killed his wife and not him, but Dylan McKay always found a way to come back. He could never stay away for too long.) The new show will premiere August 7th, on Fox.

Anyway, we’re not going to close this out on a bummer note, so here’s the momentous occasion where Brandon met Dylan for the first time. Enjoy!
