Helen Mirren is a goddess come to Earth, a prophet of glamour and smokin’ hot septuagenarian divinity. She is perfection incarnate. Hell, she can even make Budweiser look (almost) good, and I (almost) literally can’t think of anything more impressive. So if Helen Mirren says she’s grateful for Kim Kardashian’s existence… do we have to agree?
Mirren started out talking to The Telegraph about women she admires, specifically for the way they own their own sexuality.
When I was growing up, it was thought to be unbelievably sluttish to even have a bra strap showing. Everything was about women conforming. I love shameless women. Shameless and proud!Women were controlled by being shamed, so I love women who have claimed their own bodies: Madonna, Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Bonnie Raitt. I love Pussy Riot more than anything in the world. They all raise their middle fingers to this epithet of “slut”. They wear what they want to wear, behave as they want to behave.
She then moved onto the subject of the Kardashians.
I’m not into the Kardashians, it’s a phenomenon I just don’t find interesting, but - and this is the big word: B-U-T-T - it’s wonderful that you’re allowed to have a butt nowadays! Thanks to Madame Kardashian, and before her, J-Lo. We’re also allowed to have thighs now, which is great too. It’s very positive.
She makes some fair points. It’s not like Kim Kardashian is solely responsible for our recent embracing of the butt, but she hasn’t been inconsequential. And the fact that she trolls through nudity, publicly owning her sexuality and seemingly genuinely not giving a crap if her audience “approves” or not— well, if you’re still insisting on writing that off as stupid Kardashian stuff—
