Ian McKellen Knows It's 'Ridiculous' He's Never Played Bond, Notes His Uncanny Cumberbatch Resemblance

On his Twitter feed last evening, the ever-delightful Sir Ian McKellen gamely played a Q & A round with fans during which he revealed everything from his favorite books (The Wind in the Willows, The Hobbit) and roles he’d still love to play, to which actor should portray him in a film about his life. Surprisingly, it’s not Benedict Cumberbatch, though McKellen did remark on the doppelgänger of his youth.

Even though Cumberbatch may have a stronger physical resemblance, I agree that the Hiddles would be the proper choice.

But, who’s Eddie? (Redmayne?)

Too beautiful? I think not, fine Sir.

McKellen (76), who recently starred as Sherlock the Elder in Mr. Holmes, shared his starting point for playing the 93 year old detective, including being aged with make-up.

“I have to thank Dave Elsey, who devised the ‘old’ make-up. Once he’d put it on, and I looked in the mirror. I saw a really old man looking back at me, and that was my starting point into the character. “

Though McKellen shares some commonalities with Holmes, he doesn’t advise emulating the character.

“We are both observers of people like all detectives and all actors..You don’t want to be like Sherlock Holmes. He’s miserable!”

On another iconic British role the actor knows he should have been called upon to portray:

He won’t say his favorite character to play — the others “might get jealous” — but, McKellen responded definitively when asked if a certain bestie could do his Gandalf any better.

If you’re not already following them, get your twitter stalking on; the adorable pair will reteam for No Man’s Land in London next fall, which automatically means our Twitter Entertainment Factor (TEF) goes up by 1000 percent.

Here’s the good Sir answering a few questions in person.

“And I’ve seen professional actors vomiting in a bucket in the wings.”

(PStew? Was that you?)
