Page Six has a shady headline this morning insinuating that Tom Brady shared a “cryptic quote about ‘false friends,’” on his Instagram following Gisele Bündchen’s interview with Vanity Fair, her first major interview since their divorce. That is technically true, but having read the entire VF interview, there’s nothing there with which Brady could reasonably take exception. Besides, Brady’s Insta story, in which he posts a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, doesn’t seem to have much to do with Bundchen. If it did, it would only be in a flattering light.

The potential for gossip, however, did prompt me to read the entire Vanity Fair piece. There’s not a lot of scuttlebutt. She did not give him an ultimatum to retire or get divorced; she resents that the media seems to have blamed her for the divorce; and she did not divorce him over politics. Basically, it sounds like they had been growing apart for several years, at least since they moved from Boston to Tampa Bay, a city completely unfamiliar to Bündchen. In Tampa, it sounds like she felt isolated.

For the most part, she speaks fondly of Brady, wishes him only the best, and even blamed his offensive line for the Bucs’ defeat in the playoffs (living with Brady for 15 years, she’s clearly learned a lot about the sport).

Bündchen also speaks of her relationship with Tom Brady’s ex, actress Bridget Moynahan, which is something I’ve always been curious about. Recall that Brady broke up with Moynahan while she was pregnant, and Moynahan gave birth to their son only a few months after Bündchen and Brady had gotten together. Having a child in the mix, of course, meant that Bündchen and Moynahan could not avoid each other forever. It sounds like, after an initially chilly relationship, the two have become close friends. It also sounds like Jack, who is 15, continues to spend some time with Bündchen after the divorce.

She said that Moynahan’s pregnancy was a “challenging situation” and that she considered ending her relationship with Brady. But she stuck with it, and it also hastened her own decision to have a family. Now that she and Brady are divorced, the lessons she learned sharing custody of Jack with Moynahan are informing how she handled custody with Brady post-divorce.

“I say to Bridget—you know, I have a great relationship with her…” Bündchen pauses, then declares, “Everything in life comes with work. You have to go through the roller coaster. You have moments where you get to the sticky points and you’ve gotta overcome it.”

Did Bündchen always have a great relationship with Moynahan? I ask, somewhat rhetorically. “No!” Bündchen blurts. The two women didn’t meet for more than a year after Jack was born, but they eventually reached the point where Bündchen, Brady, and Moynahan mingled at the park in New York, where Moynahan is based, and the women hugged in the streets of Boston. “Love conquers all,” Bündchen says of her experience with Jack and his mom. “My life became so much richer because I got to learn so much from that.” The primary lesson: “Nothing is worth fighting [over].”

With Moynahan, “my goal was always, how can I be the most helpful? How can I make it the easiest I possibly can?” Bündchen reflects. “I put myself in her shoes and I was like, ‘How can I support her?’ Because in the end of the day, we are team players in ‘How are we going to do this so [Jack] can have the best life?’”

That’s just good parenting, co-parenting, and ex-parent parenting. Not to pour salt in the wound, but Brady lost a good one.
