It didn’t dawn on me when I wrote this post this morning that Childish Gambino has pretty much already written the counter-argument to “We’re America, Bitch.” It’s called “This is America,” and it’s the number one song in America, because a lot of people in this country already knew.
But hey! That doesn’t take away from the sheer joy of seeing a bunch of high-school kids lose their damn minds when Gambino shows up at one of Chance the Rapper’s Open Mike events in Chicago.
thank you @donaldglover for coming to our 30th @socialworks_chi @OpenMikeChicago !!! thank you @chancetherapper for leveraging your celebrity for the youth of Chicago in moments like these. thank you @chipublib @YOUmediaChicago !!! pic.twitter.com/sCMyPVRyF0— BLACK POWER ranger (@MalcolmLondon) June 12, 2018
Does it matter that you can’t even hear Gambino over the screams of the crowd? Or that most of them are watching him through the filter of their phone screens?
Not one bit. That’s pure fucking joy.
