Hailey Bieber is the latest W Magazine cover star, in which she talks about her pregnancy and how it’s changed her outlook on family. She confirmed she was expecting a child with her husband Justin Bieber via Instagram in May.

“I probably could have hid it until the end, but I didn’t enjoy the stress of not being able to enjoy my pregnancy outwardly,” she admitted. “I felt like I was hiding this big secret, and it didn’t feel good. I wanted the freedom to go out and live my life.”

This reveals how fame and social media have unfortunately warped her sense of reality: she felt like she should keep her pregnancy secret at first, probably because she was worried about how people would react or criticize, but then in defiance of that, felt it was necessary to make a big announcement because to do otherwise would also invite criticism for harboring a secret, as if it’s anyone’s business.

She said she’s focused on spending time alone with her husband before the baby comes. “In the beginning [of the pregnancy], it was super emotional for me. Like, ‘I love this human so much. How can I possibly bring someone else into this?’ I’m trying to soak in these days of it being Justin and me, just the two of us.”

This is especially important to her because she wants her small family unit to be strong when the time comes, as her relationship with the rest of her family, specifically her parents Stephen Baldwin and Kennya Baldwin, is currently estranged.

“I’m not super close with my family at this point in my life because I feel like I’m very independent. I’m my own individual now, and I’ve built my own family. But when I look back on my childhood and how I grew up, I have very fond, beautiful memories.”

She explained that her sense of independence in part comes from signing with a modeling agency at 17. “I started traveling the world, making my own money. I got my own apartment and had to learn how to live on my own and pay bills. That pushed me into adulthood kind of quickly, when most of my friends were just leaving for college.”

She’s 27 now and was only 21 when she got married. She’s moving quickly and starting young; another Hollywood kid forced to mature early. Maybe it’ll be different for her kid.
