Goldie Hawn Reaffirms What Smart People Already Knew: Kates are Tough

Sometimes it’s nice to have what you believe to be true reaffirmed by outside sources. It’s a bonus if that reaffirmation comes from one of the stars of Overboard, a movie where the premise is gross, but the cast is so charming that they sell you on it.

See, Goldie Hawn recently told People magazine something I have always known in my heart, but sometimes fools named, oh I don’t know, Jessica P. forget—mainly, that Kates are f*cking tough, man.

Per the source:

When she was in labor with Hudson in 1979, Hawn recalls being in the car on the way to the hospital. “She kicked me so hard in my vagina that I changed her name right on the spot because she was tough,” the actress, 74, tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “I had named her Rebecca and on the 405 [freeway] I went, ‘This is a Kate.’”

So, I mean, obviously I am biased but hell yes, Kates are tough, and Kate Hudsons are especially tough. Anecdotally speaking, I think most one-syllable names denote a toughness. You’re much less likely to mess with a Kate (a name that rhymes with “hate” btw) than you are with someone name Felicity, which is a nice, gentle sounding name, and also means “happiness.” Sorry to the Felicitys out there, but Kate is a tougher name with a less nice meaning behind it (I mean, without getting into the whole Kate is diminutive blah blah blah of it, let’s just say Kate means “pure.”) So says me, and so says Goldie Hawn. Kates are tough!

Now would be the time to share how I got my own name, and relay a similar story of my mom knowing I’d be tough as nails, but all I can really divulge in that department is that I got my middle name because my parents were arguing over it, and finally agreed they both liked the name of the woman down the hall in labor, and thus I was christened. Don’t feel too bad for me, though. I’m a Kate. I bounce back! Kates are great!
