Gillian Anderson Introduces Her Gorgeous Daughter to the World, Announces Guide for Women

Perennial Pajiba crush (and by that, I mean mine) Gillian Anderson was honored this week at the Olivier Awards, where she was up for Best Actress for her A Streetcar Named Desire performance. Anderson brought a date, all-grown-up daughter, Piper Maru along for the evening, where the pair made quite the red-carpet splash.

We knew she’d be gorgeous, but did we know they’d look more like sisters than mother and daughter? (Yeah, we probably did.) Piper has even more reason to be proud of mum this week; Anderson has just announced she’s working on a new book in the hopes of supporting all women. As described by the actress, the guide she will co-write with journalist/activist Jennifer Nadel, is a “call-out to all women around the world - and by women I include girls, transgender, anyone who identifies themselves as being intrinsically female…that we need to stick together and stand up for each other and not compete against each other.”

I’m not one who’s usually interested in the self-help bookshelves, but I do feel we’re entering another era of change, particularly as it pertains to women. What defines a woman, and who makes that decision; what people other than each of us has the power (or the right) to take away decisions about ourselves? And honestly, we could all do better in supporting each other, rather than separating ourselves into subgroups. I love that Gillian is so open with her thoughts on women, and sensitive to inequality, whether because of our birth gender or what we feel inside our hearts and minds. I didn’t mean to get all sappy and shit, but I do believe Anderson — who has been vocal about women’s rights and supportive in the LGBT community for years — is one of those celebrities who uses her powers for good.
