George R. R. Martin Finally Says the Words We've Longed to Hear
This week, the prolific Song of Ice and Fire author, George R. R. Martin took to his blog to make a very important announcement. No, it’s not “I’m not going to Comic-Con!” Well, actually, he did say that, but those aren’t really the words we’ve been longing to hear. What we’ve all been waiting many winters for is some real word he’s nearing the end of writing The Winds of Winter, and finally, he’s given us as close to a declarative statement as we’re likely to get.
The author began his blog post with an apology to fans who already made plans to see him at Saratoga’s World Fantasy Convention this November. You see, he won’t be able to attend because he’s decided it’s time to buckle down and finish TWoW. And not only is Martin skipping out on that scene, he’s also going to miss one of his favorite haunts, the San Diego Comic-Con (July 9 - 12, 2015), unless he FINISHES AND DELIVERS THE BOOK BEFORE THEN.
Here are the pertinent quotes (Martin amusingly refers to The Winds of Winter by its alternate title: “Son of Kong.”):
“I don’t often attend the World Fantasy Convention…but I was there the last time it was held in Saratoga, and I had a great time. A terrific town, a wonderful con.(read the post in its entirety here)
This year the convention is returning to Saratoga once again, and I was hoping to return as well…Reluctantly, however, I’ve just had to scratch Saratoga off my list of 2015 appearances…It’s just a matter of time.
I have too much to do. Too many things on my plate. Son of Kong foremost amongst them.
Also, I have decided against attending this year’s San Diego Comicon. Same reason. But since Comicon was never listed on my Appearances page, scratching it is not as big a deal.
(Should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll round, I reserve the right to change my mind).”
If he gets done by July, it’ll have been a mere 4 years since Dances hit shelves. That’s an early Christmas miracle.
