George Clooney Reminds Trump Supporters Who the Real "Hollywood Elitists" Are

George Clooney embodies everything the stereotypical rural Trump supporter loathes about establishment America and its damned liberal elitists. And while, sure, Clooney is in possession of vast economic privilege as a result of his status as a world-class actor, with the Oscar’s coming this Sunday and the promise of countless spirited anti-Trump speeches looming in the air, Clooney has a message to Trump supporters about who the real “Hollywood elitists” are: President Donald Trump and his right-hand man/boss Steve Bannon.

In an interview with French media outlet Canal+, Clooney casually reminded everyone about Trump’s “22 acting credits,” and how the president “collects $120,000 a year in his Screen Actors Guild pension fund. He is a Hollywood elitist.” Despite his relatable, “guy’s guy” facade, Trump’s Screen Actors Guild pension fund annually earned him well above the yearly income of the vast majority of his supporters.

At any rate, wondering why Clooney also classified Bannon as a Hollywood elitist? “Steve Bannon is a failed film writer,” Clooney explained, citing Bannon’s bizarre, uncreative attempts at Shakespeare and Seinfeld remakes. Ouch. “He’s an elitist, that’s the reality.”

In response to Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech in which she reproached President Trump for his constant attacks on marginalized people, and bullying of the differently abled in particular, many Trump supporters attacked her as a “Hollywood elitist” who just didn’t understand the American condition. But for all their wealth and disdain for diverse Americans across all ethnicities, races, economic classes, and gender identities, how can it be said that Trump and Bannon understand it?

Clooney, Streep, and other liberal actors undeniably enjoy privilege that inherently makes it more difficult to relate to working-class Americans. But at the very least, by nature of the liberal political ideologies they espouse, in supporting a higher minimum wage and access to affordable healthcare and education, unlike Trump and Bannon, they use their influence and elite means to benefit the working class. This makes all the difference in the world between Clooney and Streep and Trump and Bannon.
