For All the Celebrities Who Try to Convince Us They're 'Just Like Us!', Margot Robbie May Actually Have Done It

We’re in an era when celebrities are constantly trying to convince us they’re just like us, totally normal folk! Gwyneth Paltrow can hardly let an interview go by without professing her love of French fries. You know, French fries, steamed vaginas and gold-plated dildos! Normal people stuff!

The other manifestation of this need for relatability, of course, is nerd cred. If an actor (or, let’s be real actress, as this usually applies) is going to star as a movie version of comic book character, we/their PR teams so often go overboard trying to convince us that they’re HUGE nerds, love comic books, and had no friends growing up. It’s a weird narrative that has somehow become an obligatory part of celebrity narratives and press tours.

Do these celebrities need to prove their degree of nerdom to us? OF COURSE NOT. No one does. A big ol’ eff you to anyone who thinks of themselves as a gatekeeper to fandom. Actors, women, and everyone has has no obligation to prove their interests.

That being said, Margot Robbie just proved the crap out her geekery. She didn’t need to, but oh my god did she.

Talking to Jimmy Kimmy this week, the soon to be Harley Quinn shared this picture her 13-year-old gloriously geeky, Harry Potter-obsessed self.

Tea, Harry Potter, oddly slicked back hair (which she was “really into” at the time). But the very best part is the glasses. BECAUSE SHE DIDN’T EVEN NEED THEM.

I have 20/20 vision and I lied to get glasses so I could look like Harry Potter. They’re not even cool ones. They’re, like, ugly glasses. I went to the optometrist and I was like, ‘I can’t see that. Ow! My eyes hurt!’ My mom’s like, ‘Do you really need glasses?’ I was like, ‘Yes, I do!’

It’s really nice to know that this woman—

—had a real, true, fantastically geeky awkward phase. It gives me hope that one day the rest of us might, with any luck, grow out of ours.
