Actress Margaret Qualley took to Instagram to show her support of musician FKA Twigs following the latter’s decision to go public with the alleged abuses she faced at the hands of her ex, Shia LaBeouf. Over the weekend, Qualley shared an image of Twigs on the cover of Elle, wherein the musician shared the details of her experiences with LaBeouf. The caption from Qualley simply read, ‘Thank you.’
Twigs has filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf, alleging sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress. In a conversation with The New York Times, Twigs detailed incidents including moments when LaBeouf choked her, forced her to sleep naked, and knowingly infected her with an STD. LaBeouf has denied the allegations.
After news of the lawsuit emerged, LaBeouf’s response seemed to be to use his relationship with Qualley as a defense. As described by the Daily Mail, LaBeouf ‘packs on the PDA’ with Qualley. It was, to put it mildly, highly performative and kind of queasy to watch. In one video, he passionately kissed her against the side of a Ford truck while the cameras caught it all. A lot of gossip rags picked up the story and ran it with a totally uncritical eye, implying that the moment was just a moment of romance between two celebrities. For me, it felt like an obvious PR move from a desperate man accused of multiple cases of abuse by several women.
Given what we know about LaBeouf — not even discussing the allegations but the violent acts he’s bloody admitted to, including feeling the desire to attack his then-wife Mia Goth — his use of Qualley in this manner felt all the more insidious. How to distract from multiple allegations of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse made by several women? Just fling another woman in front of you as a shield and pretend everything is normal. Look at how loving and attentive he is to Qualley. Just ignore how Twigs extensively detailed his use of love-bombing as an abuse tactic. Those images showed what looked like LaBeouf back on his bullsh*t, and it was scary.
Now, Qualley has broken up with him and has thrown her support behind her ex’s former girlfriend. I hope she’s doing OK and is safe. We know LaBeouf’s tactics and how he preys on these women. We can only hope he doesn’t try it again while he awaits trial.
In a recent interview with Gayle King, Twigs explained why she will no longer answer the question, ‘Why didn’t you just leave him?’
Gayle King asks FKA Twigs why she didn't leave Shia LaBeouf:

"I think we have to stop asking that question. I'm going to make a stance and say that I'm not going to answer that question… because the question should really be to the abuser: Why are you holding someone hostage?" pic.twitter.com/qG84auSHV2
May we all learn from that.
