FKA twigs Sues Ex-Boyfriend Shia LaBeouf, Citing 'Relentless Abuse'

The NYTimes is reporting that FKA twigs has filed suit against actor Shia LaBeouf, citing physical, mental, and emotional abuse throughout their year-long relationship. FKA twigs cites a number of disturbing incidents during their relationship, including an incident in which LaBeouf: threatened to crash his car while FKA twigs was a passenger unless she professed her love for him; woke her up in the middle of the night to choke her; and knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease. LaBeouf also got angry when she looked at male waiters, and “had rules about how many times a day she had to kiss and touch him, which he enforced with constant haranguing and criticism.”

Another of LaBeouf’s ex-girlfriends, Karolyn Pho, describes similar incidents, many of which are outlined in the suit.

LaBeouf, while denying some of the specific allegations in the lawsuit, acknowledged his abusive conduct more broadly in an email with the Times.

“I’m not in any position to tell anyone how my behavior made them feel,” he said in an email to The New York Times. “I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression, only rationalizations. I have been abusive to myself and everyone around me for years. I have a history of hurting the people closest to me. I’m ashamed of that history and am sorry to those I hurt. There is nothing else I can really say.”

It’s relatively uncommon to sue an abuser for domestic violence in civil court, but FKA twigs wanted to share her story and “to raise awareness on the tactics that abusers use to control you.” She says she plans to donate a large portion of any damages she might win to domestic-violence charities. “It was actually very expensive, and a massive undertaking of time and resources, to get out,” she told the New York Times.

“What I went through with Shia was the worst thing I’ve ever been through in the whole of my life,” she said. “I don’t think people would ever think that it would happen to me. But I think that’s the thing. It can happen to anybody.”
