Getting “canceled” is bulls***. It’s a nice enough idea. A celebrity does something s***ty, people stop supporting them by not buying tickets to their movies or watching their shows, and said celebrity pays in a way that feels equal to the harm they’ve caused. The problem is that the latter part rarely happens. Hell, the former isn’t guaranteed, either. There are men in Hollywood who have ruined people’s lives and now, at most, face minor inconveniences.
There are plenty of men who have been “canceled” and are still working their dream jobs or are in adjacent positions. These men have been accused of sexual misconduct and yet have big-name actors publicly calling for them to be forgiven. They’ve shown you can admit to deviant behavior that ruined people’s careers and lives and still win a Grammy within a few years. People who amass a certain amount of wealth and fame and are then ostracized for being creeps are usually fine. That’s why it’s hard to buy the most recent sob story.
Do you remember Armie Hammer? He’s the guy who played the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network (a film that was an actual prophetic vision of disaster, unlike 2012, which had been released the previous year). Hammer, who almost played Batman, went on to be forced on the moviegoing public as the next “It Guy.” Sometimes that worked, mostly it didn’t. In 2021, when Hammer had fallen more into “that guy” territory, he was accused of heinous, criminal behavior.
Hammer was accused of sexual abuse by multiple women. The abuse claims included cannibalistic fantasies that Hammer had suggested. It is scary s***. The actor has claimed innocence but also stepped away from several projects (and was fired from others). Recently, he has attempted a bit of a comeback. That included going on Piers Morgan Uncensored and claiming he was “grateful” he was accused of cannibalism.
Now, the actor is on the next leg of his “I’m The Victim” parade. In a post to Instagram, Hammer revealed that he is selling his pickup truck as he can no longer afford the gas. “So, I’ve been back in L.A. for a couple of weeks now, this is my truck,” Hammer explained in the selfie video. “I bought this for myself in 2017 as a Christmas gift for myself. I have loved this truck intensely and taken it camping and across the country multiple times and on long road trips, and I took it for one last road trip to CarMax.” He clarifies that it is not an ad for CarMax cause he is super funny and relatable.
“Since being back in L.A., I have put about 400 or 500 dollars worth of gas in it, and I can’t afford it,” the Lone Ranger actor explained. “I can’t afford the gas anymore.” He then reveals that he’s switching to a Hybrid, has to clean the car out, and that his kids don’t approve of the situation. Oh, also, he points out that this is all happening the day before his birthday. It is weird and sad, but not in the way I think he thinks it is.
I do believe that Hammer faced some financial consequences from his Hollywood ouster and that’s great. More people in power should pay for their crimes. If it is true that he can’t afford gas, that is something he has every right to lament. Still, this public showing feels disingenuous at best and staged to garner sympathy at worst. If you told me he went into CarMax and asked for a couple of bags so he could make a quick video, I would believe you. In his defense, Wikipedia does confirm that his birthday is today. Happy Birthday, Armie. Please go back to the Cayman Islands.
